Over the last 25 years as a consultant I have observed how often this decision is made. The doctor is too busy to commit to training an employee who may be willing but unable to use the CAD Cam machine, or the digital charting, or the imaging software. One of my favorite leadership tools comes from a book entitled, Leadership and the One Minute Manager by Blanchard and Zigarmi. Here is the model:.

Several studies have debunked previous myths about the way consumers respond to marketing tactics. Be careful when making assumptions about how your patient demographics will respond to your marketing efforts. How well do you know your patients' buying habits?

In time for my 50th birthday, I decided to recommit to physical exercise. Sometimes the key to getting motivated is to feel more in control. So I have been attending Jazzercise 5-6 times per week. I have attended 5:45 am classes and evening classes to ensure that I can mark off that day on my calendar for exercise points. There are 4 aspects of daily life that affect our sense of self control.

Just today I was asked by a client what an office manager should do. Funny that he asked because I heard from friends who attended the American Association of Dental Office Managers meeting this weekend. There were over 250 women (and men) in attendance and they were given the opportunity to network with over 50 exhibitors and meeting speakers.

Practice management extension software has enabled contact with patients to be automatic. Automating contact with patients that are overdue is an easy solution to fill the holes in the schedule. You can create your own letters, emails and postcard text with your own logo/branding and the PMES will send it for you without having to think about it.

You can keep stats on your practice, too. In fact, you should. Who wouldn't want to know what to expect and adjust based on historical data? In a dental practice, the stats that you should be monitoring are:

All business owners benefit from a fresh perspective. It wipes the slate clean. It feels like you've just stepped out of the shower and you start with a new approach to solving a current problem. Right now, my clients are telling me that they are struggling with patients who are saying, "No" to treatment plans. For a fresh perspective consider these solutions:

When I hosted the luncheon, I had to be organized and chose to use disposable plates and drinks in cans. I opted not to make the food myself, I ordered sandwiches and picked up chips and potato salad. This reminds me that it isn't about how much time you put into an activity that counts. It's the result.

In the last newsletter we identified several systems that empower your people. They are: marketing, initial phone intake, computer entry, charting and treatment planning, new patient experience, financial arrangements, schedule pre-blocking, tubs and trays, sterilization, ordering supplies, follow up on delayed treatment, reactivation of existing patients, preventive maintenance, consistent communication with patients via newsletter or Facebook which leads us back to marketing.

In dental practices I firmly believe that it is important to believe in what you are capable of doing. If you wish to have the best team surrounding you, these people will appear. If you desire to work in a less stressful environment, the solutions begin to make themselves obvious.

You may be avoiding travel or technology for the sake of improving your practice. Travel can be an incentive but technology may be your obstacle. More respect from your patients is going to be the end reward. Tune in over the next several weeks as I share ways to use social media for the benefit of your practice.

Tell people that there is a link connecting oral disease to cardiovascular disease. If you have periodontal disease, you are twice as likely to have a heart attack and three times as likely to have a stroke. Take care.

So embrace the Moms in your practice. Spend time with them. Explain the oral systemic link and promote Dentistry has a Heart month. You will make them feel good about taking care of themselves for once. And by all means, remember to wear red this Friday, February 4. .

Periodontal disease is the number one form of chronic inflammation. When the liver detects inflammation in the body, it sends out a protective C-Reactive Protein (CRP). A simple finger stick blood test can detect alarming levels of CRP which is an early indicator of heart disease..

February is an ideal time to educate your patients about the oral-systemic link. Go Red For Women day is February 4, 2011. Use the time all month to educate your patients about preventing heart disease by taking care of their gums.

Dr. Schefdore and his team are the forerunners in research on the oral systemic health connection. Laura will be working closely with him in September to learn how to teach and implement a 10 step system for diagnosing and treating inflammation to reduce the incidences of heart disease, stroke and several forms of cancer. Know your numbers when it comes to healthy heart dentistry.

Laura Jamison and Dr. Ron Schefdore are pleased to be working together and announce that our own Dr. Jack Maggiore will be presenting the attached dental information at American Association for Clinical Chemistry next week. How's your attitude today? Is it worth catching? Everyone wants to be around a positive person. Most of us want to be positive people. It's advantageous to possess a sunny outlook. Doors open to optimists. They make friends, earn respect, close sales, produce loyal clients, and others enjoy and want to be like them.

Newsletters, in print and by email, enable you to stay connected to your patient base. Printed material also creates another delivery medium for your content. The more often they hear from you, the less likely you are to be forgotten. We are creatures of habit. We have a tendency to do the same things day in and day out unless our brain has been redirected. Written communication from your practice may be the wake up that your patients need.

Going green offers a tremendous PR opportunity for you while doing something that is good for the earth. Signs can be posted throughout your office to indicate what is done in that particular room to conserve. Your practice becomes more conscientious and you'll see an improvement in morale.

I spent the last 3 days in New Orleans presenting a seminar to the ICOI/ADIA meeting. The International College of Implantology (ICOI) has an organization that allows auxiliaries to become certified (ADIA). It celebrates the continuing education taken in the science and technology of placing implants. I met many great people.

Several years ago, it was recommended (even by me) that you create a few hurdles for new patients to cross over in order to qualify them appropriately as a new patient. Boy, times have changed (and am I eating my words). New patient entry into the practice is a well defined problem in many dental offices across the country. My clients and I are working on developing solid customer service skills including phone enrollment, new patient examination flow, verbal skills, offering financial options and consistent delivery of care.

Laura will be presenting Implant Indicators; what my numbers mean to me at the annual meeting of the ICOI/ADIA on April 22. She will also be offering lunch and learn sessions on how to use numbers to set goals and track a team bonus on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 at noon on both days.

Why consider promoting heart health in your dental practice? It's because 1 of 2 women will die of heart disease. It is the number one killer of your female patients and of your dental team members.

Did you wear red on Friday, February 5? I did. So did many of the hosts of the West Coast District Dental Association meeting. I attended the winter meeting of the WCDDA and every dentist who was associated with helping wore the same red jacket that I did. I am so glad they got the memo. LOL. I probably got 20 requests for directions to the restroom, where to hand in attendance sheets for CEU's, etc.

To my good fortune, I have a practicing hygienist working with me as an intern. Jessica is a full time hygienist seeking a 4 year degree and in her Capstone course work, she has decided to learn practice management. I am a mentor to her. This is my second time as a mentor.

It has been unseasonably cold in Florida since January 1. I know that my friends and family members in northern states are cold too. It seems to me that it is easier to cool off than to warm up. As the weather persists, it occurred to me that this application can be brought to gaining momentum. Is it easier to cool off than to warm up? The principles of inertia are at question. An object in motion, stays in motion. So this newsletter is to share an exciting testing program and the research to support promoting Dentistry has a Heart month in your practice.
